Editing and Judging

I am the Books Editor for The Big Issue.

For the fortnightly magazine, I commission three book reviews, a feature interview, and I write a short column.

I was on the Voiceworks editorial committee 2016-2022.

I edited poetry and nonfiction for the magazine, and contribute dto providing feedback for all unsuccessful submissions to contribute to the development of young and emerging writers. I also wrote editorials on occasion, such as in issue #113 Flare.

I’m a Co-founding Editor of Leaf Mag.

Frustrated with the lack of current careers information for those trying to enter book-related industry in Australia and curious about the process of career development, I created Leaf Mag with Jessica Harvie and Rebecca Fletcher. Together we interview Australian book professionals about their work, degrees, skills and goals—whether they be in bookshops, publishing houses, libraries or somewhere else entirely. We are interested in what draws people to working with books, what skills they use, and how they got into the roles they have now. We aim to highlight and disrupt the privileged barriers to entering these industries.

I was the Chair of the 2021 Readings Children’s Book Prize.

We’re looking for the best Australian children’s book for ages 5-12, where it is either the author’s first or second book in the age category. I wrote the report for the shortlist, announced Thursday 25 February. I couldn’t be more in love with the six books we choose. In April, we announced Penny Tangey as the 2021 winner for As Fast As I Can.

I have interned at Walker Books, Melbourne University Publishing, and Busybird Publishing. I spent a year as a Swinburne placement student at Insight Publications, working as a publishing assistant.

Across these introductory publishing experiences, I have become skilled in proofreading and taking in corrections, design briefs, administration and production assistance, and seeking permissions and negotiating budgets.

I judged the 2020 Hachette Australia Prize for Young Writers.

I previously judged in 2019, when it was called the John Marsden Hachette Australia Prize. Administered by Express Media, this prize awards the best fiction, poetry and creative nonfiction by Australian high school students.
